"Folder like files"

Post by mih »

I propose to make an optional mode "Folder like files" to sort by column "path".

Not understanding?
Why can't you sort by Path?

I need a mode where files and folders are equivalent: below a specific folder - files belonging to this folder.

Still not following?

Search | Match Path ?

Or you could enter the wanted pathname followed by the wanted search term within that path?

"c:/my documents/" wanted_file_name

Example:
folder "11" contains 3 files: a.mp3, b.mp3, c.mp3
folder "12" contains 3 files: a.mp3, b.mp3, c.mp3
I search "1".

usually see (sort by "path"):
11
12
a.mp3
b.mp3
c.mp3
a.mp3
b.mp3
c.mp3

and I want to see (sort by "path" and marked "Folder like files"):
11
a.mp3
b.mp3
c.mp3
12
a.mp3
b.mp3
c.mp3

Everything does not have this option, try HDDB or Master Seeker

I think you're asking for something called "Flat view" - like this: Image

The sub-folders of a root folder are displayed in the file list (right window pane) in a directory tree format; the files belonging to each sub-folder are displayed indented, under their owner folder (as seen in my screenshot).

My screenshot is of a directory tree as viewed in Directory Opus. I never use Windows Explorer since it is so clumsy at properly handling file management tasks.

I thought that "flat view" we already have. I'm talking about the sort by "path" when files and folders are equal. I do not speak English, but I think that the essence is clear from my example.

I see it (sort by "path"):
folder С:\11
folder С:\12
file С:\11\a.mp3
file С:\11\b.mp3
file С:\11\c.mp3
file С:\12\a.mp3
file С:\12\b.mp3
file С:\12\c.mp3

I want to see it (sort by "path"):
folder С:\11
file С:\11\a.mp3
file С:\11\b.mp3
file С:\11\c.mp3
folder С:\12
file С:\12\a.mp3
file С:\12\b.mp3
file С:\12\c.mp3

I'll consider an option to sort files and folders together.

Currently it's a bit tricky as Everything treats files and folders as two separate indexes.

This can be particularly odd if you are Indexing File AND Folder sizes, & sorting by size.

Then a search like (or similar to):

size:>10MB

(sorted by Size) will first list all files, followed by all folders (in default descending size order).

Bumping topic for a hectic-time use-case.
By sorting on date (usually = modified), with this feature we would get a perfect timeline of our work with that subject, including folders created in multiple blind iterations of research, with folders created by installations (which are frequently numerous) separate. You get the picture. "It reduces our cognitive load to tolerable" -- which we especially appreciate when focus is running low.
Please and double thanks again. :geek:

I also want this feature.
Has it been implemented yet?

[BTW, I love Everything. I discovered it only a few weeks ago. I tell everybody about it.]
