opening program problem

Post by searay »

Every time I start Search Everything the page fills up with hundreds of items in the window when I haven't even asked for a search. When I try to open a new search window another page with all the same files listed. How do I get rid of this annoying behavior?

Tools->Options->Results->Hide results when search is empty

Funny how personal tastes differ: what you consider annoying, I consider as extremely useful :-)

Default, Everything starts with a list of all the files and folders it has found (well, the part that fits on your screen, at least)
In the Everything status-bar (bottom row of Everything window) you see the total number of files/folders.

If you start searching for - for example - filename.txt the "Search as you type" zooms in on the list of matching files (the number in the statusbar will decrease rapidly). In most cases this means you have to type just a view characters of the filename before "filename.txt" is on your screen. Saves you (well, me in this case :-) ) from typing the complete filename ..

There is however an option to only start searching after you give an <Enter> :
In the menu, choose Tools, Option, UI . There you find an option "Search as you type". Untick this box.

What is you use case? Why do you need a list of all files?

Sorted by runcount

EDIT: that was submitted before I wanted.

Should read: Sorted bij runcount (decreasing) gives you a list of most accessed files/folders. Half of the time (that might be slightly exaggerated) I don't even have to type anything ..

Well. It is great that Everything has many options for different use cases :-)

But I'm annoyed by this list of incomprehensible files and directories

Exactly! I'm quite new at this and I keep discovering new options. It seems *everything* is possible :-)

I like to show all results sorted by date modified so I can keep a watch on my file systems and find recent files easily.

To ovg:

Thanks, that fixed my problem. I really appreciate the "direct and to the point" answer.

Amazed at how many others also responded. It's appreciated.
