[Solved] path:len:=260 (or more) => no copy on right click menu

Post by w64bit »

For all files with path:len:=260 (or more) the copy/move commands are missing on right click menu in Everything 932.
If I use File Explorer for these files the copy/move command is present.
I mention that I set up registry LongPathsEnabled = 1 in my Win 10 1809 x64.
Is there anything I can do to have copy/move commands displayed on right click menu in Everything for these files?

Confirmed.

1.4.1.924, Win7 x64

It looks like that's nothing new, as in it's been that way for a long time, perhaps forever.

While I've messed many a time with path:len:>254, suppose I've never actually used the context menu in those instances?

I'll also note, that an abbreviated context menu clues me in that something is "up".
Like if I select a set of files, & the context menu is not "right", that kind of tells me that one of the files in my selection is on a currently offline drive.

For all files with path:len:=260 (or more) the copy/move commands are missing on right click menu in Everything 932.
Fixed for the next major version of Everything.

Everything was prefixing these really long paths with \\?\
However, the Windows shell does not like that, so the prefix will be removed for shell calls in the next major version.
Without the prefix, the shell calls appear to work. There's still limitations with gathering properties and icons for really long filenames.

Thank you.
Any estimation for release date for next major version?
Weeks, months?

In this case, if only a prefix removal is the fix, can it be done in 1.4.1?
Sorry I am pushing but it really be helpful if long path copy/mode can work.

(Not really concerned, but) not working in XP.

Everything .933 does work.
But long path, >=260, context-menu is (still) truncated.

You'll need Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later with LongPathsEnabled enabled.

As for Windows XP/7 the shell is still limited to 260 characters.

As for some really long filenames working for you on Windows 7, the shell will try to use shortnames, for example:
The shell may change:
C:\Local\Sandbox\12-26-DefaultBox\drive\C\Local\RUBEN\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6ZBL3F3Y\mpositions;kw=Metacafe;kw=disambiguation;kw=Underground;kw=Urban;kw=Metacafe;kw=out;kw=of;kw=context;kw=music;pg=;wikified;dur=00_00;dc_ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metacafe[1].htm
to:
C:\Local\Sandbox\12-26-~1\drive\C\Local\RUBEN\Tempor~1\Conten~1\6ZB3L3FY\mpositions;kw=Metacafe;kw=disambiguation;kw=Underground;kw=Urban;kw=Metacafe;kw=out;kw=of;kw=context;kw=music;pg=;wikified;dur=00_00;dc_ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.metacafe[1].htm

Limited to 260? No. Once upon a time, an app (based on java) saved names with up to 300 and 400 characters (and it's not Unicode). Probably you can not imagine it, but it was possible in Windows 7. Everything worked without a problem, although in very rare cases followed by file "crossings and file" system errors and CHKDSK was run.
