Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
When a drive letter is replaced / changed, e.g. D: to F: while Everything is running, does Everything notice that and change the volume label or does it just add a new volume and keep the content of D:?
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Everything identifies volumes by a unique GUID, and will notice the volume has moved.
Everything should perform a reindex to resort its database.
This will remove the old D: index and add the F: index.

Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
OK, thank you.
But what was the reason then - sorry, I have asked something similar some time before, but forgotton reason - that I have so many D:, E: drives here in the indexes:

Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Everything is seeing this volume as a new volume every time it is inserted.
Please try checking Automatically remove offline volumes.

Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Although it has the same unique GUID and thus is the identical drive? Why is that? Sorry, for my misunderstanding.Everything is seeing this volume as a new volume every time it is inserted.
But wouldn't that remove all of the volumes I need of my drives being offline / going offline (each time)? So I never could keep a volume anymore of external drives? Please try checking Automatically remove offline volumes.
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Windows manages volume GUIDs. In theory this GUID should remain the same for the same drive.Although it has the same unique GUID and thus is the identical drive? Why is that? Sorry, for my misunderstanding.
It looks like the GUID is changing for the same drive for you.
Do you have multiple external drives that share the same E: drive letter?
Correct. But wouldn't that remove all of the volumes I need of my drives being offline / going offline (each time)? So I never could keep a volume anymore of external drives?
You would have to manually remove offline volumes.
Unfortunately this is tricky as Everything currently only gives you the drive letter.
Showing the volume label is on my TODO list.
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
No, I don't. May be the same make and models have the same GUID (but that would not be unique, I guess)? E.g. 3 WD MyBook have they same one? Very strange.Windows manages volume GUIDs. In theory this GUID should remain the same for the same drive.
It looks like the GUID is changing for the same drive for you.
Okay, that would work against the reason (respectively one of the reasons) I use Everything / such a program.Correct.
Very great, so I better will wait for that version. You would have to manually remove offline volumes.

Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
But disables the Include in database setting for that F: (if "Automatic include ..." is disabled ...)
(Everything 1.4.1.947)
If I remember correctly, you have (way) more disks than there are letters in the alphabet.
So driveletters have to be re-used, starting with the "lower" ones in the alphabet.
Something to consider (I might have mentioned this before):
Instead of giving each disk a drive letter, you can also "mount" them in your C:-drive, like this:
(where "Some Name" is a good description of the external disk, but don't make it too long )

What does that mean? Is there any setting I should change? But disables the Include in database setting for that F: (if "Automatic include ..." is disabled ...)

No no, respectively I only use the bigger drives so there are enough letters for them. I do not use the older drives anymore. If I remember correctly, you have (way) more disks than there are letters in the alphabet.
Many thanks for the gif! So I would have to do it once for each drive or the ones I want to mount in the future. And after I just can plug them in and they are recognized (automatically mounted) like a drive plugged in as usual? Nothing more to do. And the drives work like usual.Something to consider (I might have mentioned this before):

And if I change the Notebook, computer I would have to do it again (like I would have to assign all the drive letters again for normal use). There is no method to save the data and export them to the next computer, I assume.
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
You can ignore that; it was meant for @void.
Yes, yes, correct and yesMany thanks for the gif! So I would have to do it once for each drive or the ones I want to mount in the future. There might be a way to export and import those Windows settings, although I do not have any idea how (yet). There is no method to save the data and export them to the next computer, I assume.
Interesting enough to figure this out. Don't buy a new computer in the next couple of days ...
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Alright, many thanks!
So mounting (didn't know - of course - such is possible at all in this context) here has advantages / is useful if there is no letter left anymore. Does it have an advantage even if there were enough letters left?
By the way, is there a way to start such a gif from the beginning manually (may be by pressing F5 but that would be a bit slow), at any time? Or to pause it? Or jump back and forward? I do not think so, but...

It might be a very circumstancial procedure, I could imagine. No no, no new computer unless this one implodes or such. There might be a way to export and import those Windows settings, although I do not have any idea how (yet).

Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Easy identification of Disks in Everything. Instead of e:\folder\file, you now have c:\external\Backup1\folder\file so you know file is on Backup1 disk.Does it have an advantage even if there were enough letters left?
I'm no specialist in this area - by far - but I use voidimageviewer (yes, that is "our" void ) and Irfanviewer to display images.By the way, is there a way to start such a gif from the beginning manually (may be by pressing F5 but that would be a bit slow), at any time? Voidimageviewer has options to step through animated GIF's (under Menu:Animation).
Download the portable version of voidimageviewer.exe; download the GIF and drag it to voidimageviewer. That should do the trick.
Don't know if Irfanview has similar possibilities (couldn't find them).

This is unbelievable, our...I didn't know at all! Holy pixel!I'm no specialist in this area - by far - but I use voidimageviewer (yes, that is "our" void )
Yes, with that program it will work, I guess. Will try it out.Voidimageviewer has options to step through animated GIF's (under Menu:Animation).
Many thanks!
...no, clicking the buttons at the bottom does not pause / play the gif here.
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Ah yes, works, thank you!
Re: Does Everything notice a drive letter change?
Media Player Classic (both MPC-BE & MPC-HC) will allow you to pause/step through the .gif.

Great, thank you, good to use with the common shortcuts.
