How to open search results (individual files)

Post by sinbarambam »

Newbie question:
when I use the up/down arrows to scroll through my search results, how can I hit ENTER (or similar) to open an individual file? (At the moment, clicking ENTER takes the cursor back up to the top of the list of search results but doesn't open the file).

Thanks for your help.

Enter or double-click on the name.
That should be default action.

Have you made any changes to; Everything Options | Context Menu or |Keyboard ?

And the file you double-clicked (or pressed ENTER on) is now also at the top?
Out of the box, Everything results are sorted by Run Count. Each time you double-click a file or folder, that one gets a 'like'. Most likes are on top.

But that doesn't explain why your file doesn't open. There can be quite a few of reasons for that.
Are you rnning Everything as administrator? In that case: try running Everything as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Everything service.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
  • Try to open the file

If that didn't solve your issue:
- What is the filetype (like .pdf)
- Does this happen with other files too (try some .txt file)
- Can you open the file in File Explorer?

Thanks both for your replies!
I checked and it turns out I was not running the application as an administrator (I did not change that so not sure how that happened). In any case, selecting 'run as administrator' solved the problem :D
