Search for list of files?

Post by reelismism »

Hey all :) ,

I'm currently going through my Android at this moment and have 100's of video files I want to ensure are backed up - between online and offline.

I've got Everything working well with GSuite and can quickly search for individual filenames to ensure they're online, I also have *some* of these files offline on an ext HDD.

Wondering if I can prepare a list of the multiple files I'm looking for, like in a txt file, each filename per line, or something, to then get into Everything that might be able to show me a list of results?
In order to see what's online, offline, on HDD, etc.

Other than that, using Everything more and more, how does anyone live without it!?

Save the filenames (either as the basename or full path and filename) in a txt file encoded as UTF-8

basename only Example:

Code: Select all

My file.txt
My song.mp3
My Video.mp4
full path and filename Example:

Code: Select all

c:\documents\My file.txt
c:\music\My song.mp3
d:\videos\My Video.mp4
To search this txt file:
  • In Everything, from the Search menu, click Advanced Search.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and to the right of Search for a list of file names, click Browse....
  • Select your txt file and click Open.
  • Click OK.
This will build a really long filelist: search.
Note: there is a display limit of 4000 characters so your search box may appear empty. However, it will still function correctly.

Thanks very much, yet I just followed your steps with copying and pasting random photo filenames (no extensions) for a wordpress install and it only showed the following files:
cropped-perry-grone-lbLgFFlADrY-unsplash.jpg
USER

Here's what ended up in search bar:

Code: Select all

filelist:"bennett-tobias-W4CPwaUlRtg-unsplash|church-of-the-king-j9jZSqfH5YI-unsplash|annie-spratt-cVEOh_JJmEE-unsplash|austin-distel-wD1LRb9OeEo-unsplash|perry-grone-lbLgFFlADrY-unsplash|carlos-lindner-ZVo7vtXilCs-unsplash|nate-johnston-R8IdNx4eJH0-unsplash|charles-etoroma-95UF6LXe-Lo-unsplash|corinne-kutz-jfIgh0ijkqM-unsplash|avatar1|avatar2|avatar3|seth-doyle-YEK-1BZ7L1s-unsplash|brown-haired-girl-in-white-sleeveless-dress-standing-beside-756453|man-in-white-v-neck-t-shirt-and-black-pants-775358|men-s-white-dress-shirt-936229|photography-of-a-beautiful-woman-smiling-1024311|man-in-red-jacket-1681010|man-wearing-gray-and-red-crew-neck-shirt-smiling-1121796|men-s-wearing-black-suit-jacket-and-pants-937481|camera-contemporary-flash-134469|Posts-Export-2019-June-13-2007|divider-free-img|right-arrow-small|right-arrow-light|left-arrow-small|d4217c4527e2e6266f1eab3ca7ec1d24|ed26a61ee3d070b3295d2d602eca8fc0|499c4ccae79211c828c670537a077b3c|343c8fc4a8ea8734cca588b66b229a25|user|kali-4|woman-smiling-at-the-camera-1181686|bennett-tobias-YMpvL5eAtg0-unsplash|annie-spratt-cVEOh_JJmEE-unsplash2|bill-wegener-LqOO5Ko0zSo-unsplash|muhammad-taha-khan-0oZ7Nas7x4Q-unsplash|cropped-perry-grone-lbLgFFlADrY-unsplash|logo_scoach_wht|logo_icon_scoach|logo_scoach_lite|camera-contemporary-flash-134469|Buddhism-Child_CONTRAST|wind wheel|photo-1428189923803-e9801d464d76|xls-hoto-386148|foogy sunrise at highway|concrt_1|photo-1452110040644-6751c0c95836|e76494ac|fear-of-heights-2040805|6828320290_66fcecdd8f_o|imHjzx27pdT9r|kali-6|fear-of-heights-2040805-e1555190925965|bokeh_1920|Teddy_Shallow-depth|blog-18|water_droplets_macro_light_bulbs_depth_of_field_desktop_1920x1280_hd-wallpaper-1130627|white-05|light-bokeh-macro-depth-of-field-blurred-1920x1080-hd-wallpaper|Cityscapes-Cars-Urban-Bokeh-Depth-Of-Field-Nighttime-Street|004|bg-720p-FLIP_2mb|bg__0000_Fear Heights|bg__0009_Buddhism|bg__0008_Blue Table|bg__0007_Shorebreak|bg__0006_Bud|bg__0005_Highway|bg__0004_Clouds|bg__0003_UNSDG|bg__0002_Mtns|bg__0001_Concrete" file:

Anything?

I realise no you were specifying full filenames, but that's not what I need.

Can it work as a multiple item partial text search?

For partial searches, please try the following:
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /paste_new_line_op=1
  • where 1 is OR and 0 is AND (default)
  • If successful you should see paste_new_line_op=1 in the status bar for a few seconds.
  • Paste the contents of multi-line text file into the search bar in Everything. -If possible try avoid copying the last empty line or remove the trailing |<> in your search.
this search can take several seconds to complete.

Hi void

RE: Version 1.4.1.1023 (x64)

I selected a couple of files, 4, from a list of 4500+, I used "Ctrl+Shift C" to copy "\Full Path\Filename" a new Everything window opened with the string below in the "Search Bar".

filelist:"Y:\Phone Backup\SD Card SGS8 Edge+ 256Gb\Telegram\Telegram Documents\1_5051149649134486518.mp3|Y:\Phone Backup\SD Card SGS8 Edge+ 256Gb\Telegram\Telegram Documents\1_5050834578923588360.mp3|Y:\Phone Backup\SD Card SGS8 Edge+ 256Gb\Telegram\Telegram Documents\1_5051149649134486517.mp3|Y:\Phone Backup\SD Card SGS8 Edge+ 256Gb\Telegram\Telegram Documents\1_5037685875849298847.mp3"

filelist:" a pipe | between each path\filename "

I'm not sure if I opened the new window & Everything pasted the string or both were done by Everything.

How did this happen? I tried replicating it with no success.

I created an Excel file that does that for me, Column B Concatenates the data from Column A adding a < > & pipe to each file/cell (I added a checkbox to strip away the path so I can search for matching filenames anywhere)

in this article, you provide the steps to do something similar in V1.5a, how did I do it in V1.4? Can it be done with just the filenames? No paths
viewtopic.php?t=10481

Thanks in advanced

Everything will use a filelist: search when you copy the file (not the filename) eg: Ctrl + C
Everything will use a list of ORed filenames when you copy the filename eg: Ctrl + Shift + C

Please consider adding the Copy Name to Clipboard context menu item:
  • In Everything 1.4, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Context Menu tab on the left.
  • Select Copy Name to Clipboard.
  • Check Show this item.
  • Click OK.
Right click your files/folders and click Copy Name to Clipboard.

Hi void

Thanks a million for the reply,

Everything will use a filelist: search when you copy the file (not the filename) eg: Ctrl + C
Tested and it works.

Everything will use a list of ORed filenames when you copy the filename eg: Ctrl + Shift + C
I followed the steps and pasted "filenames" only to the Search bar and they were added with ANDing not ORed.

I pasted /paste_new_line_op=1 taken from viewtopic.php?t=7351, and hit enter, it didn't work,
paste_new_line_op=0 in the .ini file did not change to =1 (It did work for V1.5)

I changed it manually to =1 in the .ini file and now it works. Everything added <> for each line and replaced a LF/CR with a pipe | when pasting multiple lines into the Search Bar.

Am I not correctly executing /paste_new_line_op=1 in V1.4 or it's not implemented?

Thanks again

After pressing ENTER is there anything shown in the status bar?

(paste_new_line_op=1 should be shown for a few seconds)

Please make sure there's no invisible space at the start.

Code: Select all

/paste_new_line_op=1

What version of Everything 1.4 are you using?

No Spaces
What version of Everything 1.4 are you using?
Version 1.4.1.1023 (x64)

I tried updating to "Everything-1.4.1.1024.x64-Setup.exe" got the following error on 2 different stations,

There's a pending delete on the Everything service:

Please uninstall Everything.
Restart your PC.
Reinstall Everything. (run the installer as a standard user)

Is something blocking Everything from running as admin?

/paste_new_line_op=1
Please make sure its shown in the search box as you see here:
Please try copying it with out the trailing newline.

/paste_new_line_op=1

I run my Everything with an -instance can this possibly be the issue?
"C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe" -instance "V1.4"
C:\Users\Lazer\AppData\Roaming\Everything\Everything-V1.4.ini

No Issue for V1.5
"C:\Program Files\Everything 1.5a\Everything64.exe" -instance "V1.5a"
C:\Users\Lazer\AppData\Roaming\Everything\Everything-1.5a.ini

Addition: I have 3 separate PC at my station with the same setup (Everything that is), I'm getting the same on all of them, it only works after manually changing the .ini to paste_new_line_op=1 (in Notpad++).

Thanks

Have you changed your search_command_prefix?
No

I added a 0 to search_command_prefix= after closing App/Process then relaunched and it's still the same.

I tested other Search Commands like the following and they don't work either (viewtopic.php?t=5817).
about:
about:config
about:credits
about:license, about:licence
about:home
about:preferences, about:options
/debug, /console
/update E:\
/ini_option=search_command_prefix=0

When I paste any Search Command the Status bar shows querying... for a split-second

Thanks

Please leave search_command_prefix empty.

Are you pressing ENTER in the search box?

Is / not a / for your keyboard layout? What is your keyboard layout?
(shown in the Windows taskbar on the bottom right)
edit: can't be this because about:config doesn't work...

Hi void

Please leave search_command_prefix empty.
Done

Are you pressing ENTER in the search box?
Always

Is / not a / for your keyboard layout? What is your keyboard layout?
It is
Keyboard Model: Dell SK-8135
Button /? left of Shift Key
EN English (United States)

I also copied the command you posted.
The about: commands don't work either.

Maybe I should do a clean Uninstall, Re-install & use a clean\default ini

Thanks

Hi void

I did the following.

Clean Uninstall (IObit).
Rebooted.
Re-installed.
All the commands work fine.
Pasted the contents from my old ini file into the new one & it stopped working.
Reverted back to the new data & now it works fine again.

I'm attaching an Excel file with all the parameter differences between the 2 ini files so you can catch the culprit.

Thanks

Thank you for your Everything.ini
file_open_keys=13
The File | Open command was set to ENTER (global).
The default keyboard assignment is ENTER (result list)

Everything was trying to open the result list selection on ENTER.
