Bizarre crashing

Post by terrypin »

Searching for 'numbers.jpg' immediately crashed Everything. After it finished its indexing I tried again with the same result. I'm waiting for that to refresh and before posting I will try with some other strings.

OK, several other random searches worked normally. Including 'number*.jpg' (the hits for which did not include 'numbers.jpg', so at least I've achieved my initial objective). So I bit the bullet and for the third time tried the mystery search. But as soon as I'd entered the 's' of 'numbers'... CRASH.

Thank you for the crash report.

What version of Everything are you using? (Help -> About)

Does the crash occur with the latest Everything 1.5 alpha?

Could you please send a mini-crash dump to support@voidtools.com: Privacy

Just about to start the debug log but saw a message top left of my screen telling me to either run as admin or install the Everything service. (Maybe it also appeared earlier and I didn't notice in my impatience to restart.)

So before proceeding, I assume I should go ahead and install the service?

Or perhaps restart it, as I see that Task Manager > Services show it as stopped

Let's leave that for now.

Something else odd going on here. There is no Debug menu item under Tools.

Please check Install Everything Service.

For Everything 1.4, please try the following:

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly:
  • In Everything 1.4, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Please try disabling icon shell extensions:
  • In Everything 1.4, type in the following search and press ENTER:
  • /icon_shell_extensions=0
  • type in the following search and press ENTER:
  • /restart

Please try a complete database rebuild:
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Delete your %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything\Everything.db
  • Restart Everything.

There is no Debug menu under Tools in Everything 1.4.

Thanks for your patience.

Things have moved on - and not for the better!

I uninstalled and then downloaded your latest version, 1.4.1.1009.

But I cannot execute Everything-1.4.1.1009.x64-Setup.exe. Nothing happens using any method.

Before uninstalling I did install the Everything service. It still crashed on the 'numbers' search.

I also noted that on trying to start the E.P.S server, a dialog was displayed asking for a host name plus my user name and pw ... which I don't seem to have on file, so I'll guess at next opportunity!

My next step is to reboot.

If it's relevant I had WU a couple of days ago, to Windows 10 Pro Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1110)

Cannot get various setup.exe files to run. Nor Everything-1.4.1.1009.x64.msi. Researching that now, so far in vain. Currently running sfc /scannow.

The bad news remains as per my last post, i.e. recent EXE application set up files will not run, including Everything-1.4.1.1009.x64-Setup.exe

The good news is that Everything_(64bit)_v1.4.1.1003.exe does run, and I have re-installed it until I sort out the more general issue. And the additional good news is that a search for 'numbers' no longer crashes the program. (And delivers many hits, which you'll recall 'number*' did not with the previous installation!)

EDIT: Just thought I'd try downloading with Chrome instead of Waterfox. Got this 'Blocked' message:

In case you have any insights/suggestions on this worrying wider problem, here's a copy of my post to https://www.tenforums.com/general-supp ... ost2265321

--------------------
Many recent EXE application set up files will not run. This presumably started a few days ago, but I then thought it was confined to just one setup EXE (Ultimaker_Cura-4.10.0-amd64.exe). This morning I discovered it's many (but NOT all) of them. The inactive ones seem to be the most recent (4-6 weeks). And if there's an MSI alternative, that does not run either.

As far as I can tell all program EXEs do open correctly. It's just the setup EXEs that have this weird problem.

Examples of setup files that do NOT run:
Everything-1.4.1.1009.x64-Setup.exe
OfficeSetup.exe
iview458_setup.exe
Google_Chrome_(32bit)_v91.0.4472.101.exe
Ultimaker_Cura-4.9.1-amd64.exe

Examples of setup files that DO run:
VLC_Media_Player_(64bit)_v3.0.14.exe
Skype_v8.72.0.94.exe
NotePad_(64bit)_v7.9.5.exe
MediaMonkey_v5.0.0.2338.exe
Everything_(64bit)_v1.4.1.1003.exe
FastStone_Capture_v9.5.exe

Tried many things, including the familiar sfc /scannow, DISM ScanHealth, and various suggestions such as all those here:
https://thegeekpage.com/fix-exe-files-n ... indows-10/

As many do run that was, of course, desperation flying in the face of logic, and none have fixed it.

I'm now pondering the fact that the failures appear to be mainly the more recent files downloaded. Could it be down to a recent Win 10 update I wonder?

This is Win 10 Pro Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1110).

Sorted!

I finally found the cause of the setup EXEs failing. That message from Chrome was the clue to go hunting in the Win 10 Internet security settings. Enabled an obscure option (that perhaps had somehow become disabled) and both Chrome and Waterfox were able to download 1.4.1.1009. That is now installed.

Enabled an obscure option
And what was that?

(My guess was going to be an antivirus interfering, but I guess Chrome could be considered a virus too ;-).)
