Everything.exe file disappears

Post by tique »

I installed everything 1.4.1.1009 64-bit on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit built 19043.1237.
At first no problem at all. After turning the computer off and on again, incredibly only the Everything.exe file (2209 Kb) had disappeared
from C/Program/Everything folder. I tried other times installing the software and always, after a while even without restart Windows, Everything.exe disappeared (deleted?). I have been careful not to use CCleaner or disk cleanup.
Basically I can't install the software, Using the portable version the problem does not exist, everything is ok

Any idea ??

Do you use Trnd Micro virus scanner?
In the past it did mis-behave in regards to Everything. Mybe they are make the same mistakes again.

As a test you could (temporary) exclude everything, exe from being scanned by your virusscanner.

I was going to suggest using index journal to monitor when the file was deleted but it's extremely stupid of me as you wont be able to run Everything!!

Possibly start another instance of Everything and monitor the index journal from there, assuming the instance doesn't go walk about as well.

There are some programmes which monitor file activity which may help give an idea of when Everything was deleted and possibly the process that deleted it, unfortunately I can't remember what they are but I'll look through my computer and see if I can find them.
Possibly Nirsoft fileactivitywatch.

If Everything is being deleted while Everything service is running you should get an error message saying that the file is in use (or something along those lines)

Silly question, are you sure the file isn't being hidden?

I'm using Malwarebyte and Windows defender. I do not have any other antivirus.
Also the file is not hidden (I have the display of hidden files turned on).

When I said file disappeared/deleted it is because as I clicked on the Everything icon on the desktop I received the answer: file not found check the path. I made the simple test of copying the everything.exe file from the portable folder to the folder in C: and the problem apparently seems solved until the next disappearance of everything.exe. There is some software that hates Everything, hi.

Thanks harryray2 for the advice. I knew Nirsoft but not the FileActivityWatch program. I also read about FileAccessErrorView
I will download both. I want to see if I can understand something.

Windows Defender automatically deletes files it believes are malware.
Malwarebytes automatically deletes and "quarantines" files it believes are malware.

Tell them both to stop doing that.

Malwarebytes has a list of the files it has taken action on and I have not found anything related to Everything.
I have not included Everything as an exclusion in Malwarebytes
Instead I added the everything folder and file exe to Windows 10 Defender whitelist.
Since then no more problems, It looks like the culprit is Windows Defender
Thanks for the tips
