Everything refuses to scan system disc c

Post by mczerski »

I want to "revitalise" a similar thread developed a few years ago at viewtopic.php?t=4770

My problem is similar but not the same:
1. My Everything 1.5.0.1275a (x64) does not scan (or index) my system drive c which carries my system: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and the system runs smoothly or at least I do not experience any substantial problems with its operation.
2. The c: drive is an SSD type disc, just checked against errors by the chkdsk tool with options /f /r /x
3. My c: drive is listed in Everything -> Tools -> Options -> NTFS
4. I have no excludes set in Everything -> Tools -> Options -> Exclude
5. Everthing indexes and searches all other drives perfectly except that "unfortunate" disc c:.
6. Disc c: is displayed on the initial serach screen as c: and ET instructed to open path c: performs the command correctly and quickly. However, no files or folders are displayed to be carried by the c: disc. That is, when I enter e: or i: (i.e. letters of other discs) ET displays thousand of folders and files, but when I enter c: ET displays nothing, i.e. the search window is empty.
7. I tried to run ET in the debug mode and debug seems to report some errors that I do not how to interpret. For instance a debug message: "Failed to open volume \\?\Volume{499ec446-73a5-4f78-9045-916c92e31c00} opened ffffffffffffffff 0.000785" tells me nothing at all as I am not an IT prof. I can copy and paste the debug log here or into a file to be attached to this thread, but the log is fairly long and I am afraid it may be inappropriate to share such long logs and/or listings.

My question is: what I should do to have my system disc indexed and searched. Without that ET is "loosing its charm" and fundamental functionality for me.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Please make sure your C: drive is included in your index:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Select your C: drive.
  • Check include in database.
  • Click OK.
Please check your C: drive for errors:
  • Please backup anything important on your drive before checking it for errors.
  • In Windows Explorer, right click your drive and click Properties.
  • Click the Tools tab.
  • Click Check now...
  • Click Start
  • If prompted to schedule a scan on the next restart, click Yes.
Please try forcing a rebuild:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.
Please let me know if the issue persists.

Thank you for your quick reply. The issues seems solved, but I intersperse my remarks in order to make it easy for you and other forum members to identify the action(s) which helped to solve the issue.

I will intersperse my replies in your message. Here they go:
void wrote: Thu Mar 03, 2022 9:57 am Please make sure Everything is installed correctly:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
OK. I did. This option had not been checked before I sent my first message.
[*]Uncheck Run as administrator.
OK It was checked and I unchked the option as instructed by you.
[*]Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
[*]Click OK.
OK It was checked as a square-check and I chked it so that it is now tick-checked.
[*]Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
[*]Restart Everything.
[/list]
As to the following instructions, I had written before that BEFORE I POSTED the first message, the c: drive had been on the list of drives and included in my index and that the drive c: had just been checked and might be repaired with chkdsk /f/r/x. And after following the check of drive c: by chkdsk when restaring the ET I used the index force-rebuild option, but to no avail and files/folders on drive c: had remained unindexed/unsearched by ET. Now, after performing complementary actions you advised, the isue has been solved!!!
And let me happily reiterate that issue has been solved due to your advice and more specifically, the issue seems to have been been solved by one or more settings/actions that I had not set/done before I posted my first message and did only upon your advice as described above.
Thanks agains. Cheers,

I'd like to reopen this. I'm having the same issues.
I have followed the same steps but it refuses to scan drive C.
When I force rebuild it seems to scan for an instant with no result.
Drive D works.
Are there any logging options so I can see what it's failing to do?

Thanks!

Maybe your C: Drive has the file/folder attribute "System" and you have excluded system files from indexing?

This happened to me the other day with some folders. I solved it with a tool called attribute changer.

Everything ignores attributes on drives when excluding system/hidden files/folders.

Thank you for the debug logs.

The debug logs show the Everything Service returning an empty index for your C: drive.

Could you please send the same debug logs, but this time run Everything as an administrator:
  • In Everything, from the File menu, click Exit.
  • Right click a shortcut to Everything and click Run as an administrator.
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /debug_log
  • From the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.
    ---wait for Everything to reindex---
  • From the File menu, click Exit.
  • Restart Everything.
Please send your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt to support@voidtools.com
(This will capture any errors that occur when indexing your C: drive)

Thank you for the debug logs.

"Everything" cannot access the encrypted volume (EFS).

The OS returns the following error:
808
ERROR_ENCRYPTED_IO_NOT_POSSIBLE
The read or write operation to an encrypted file could not be completed because the file has not been opened for data access.

Everything does open the volume for data access, so it's currently not clear what is casuing the issue.
I will look into a solution.

Please try allowing the administrator account access to your EFS volume.

For now, please try indexing your C: drive as a folder index.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Select C:
  • Uncheck Include in database.
  • Click the Folders tab on the left.
  • Click Add....
  • Select your C: drive and click OK.
  • Click OK.
