Is there a way to get the order of the columns like they are set in "Edit Bookmarks"?

If you are experiencing problems with "Everything", post here for assistance.

Regarding column views, e.g. switching from bookmarks (with columns) to a filter other than "Everything" (with columns),
I also have an unexpected result:

Columns of bookmark A and columns of filter X are displayed together.
Only the columns from filter X should be displayed in my opinion.

I have to check/work out/translate this - details to follow ...
OK, yes, very strange.
PS: Your images are not visible...
Yes, I had noticed there was no image, but just left it...just used the wrong tags (IMG). Corrected now. Sorry.
Filters temporarily add columns. (they do not set the columns)

Use columns: in your filter search to specify the column set.
OK, thank you, but I REALLY...
Biff, you are smarter than most.
Holy shift, many thanks for the kind and calming (not so true) words (I lie myself as well all the time to avoid conflicts or get benefits). As I can see here myself, I can make almost nothing understandable, I fail completely at the expression. So there absolutely is no smartness available here at all, I really know.

Your screenshots are helpful.
Thank you very much! Actually it somehow does not look like that until now. I even wasn't able to show the proper ones, I am afraid.
Could you please send a screenshot of what you are seeing.
I am afraid, I am not able to. I already completely failed doing that in that other columns thread I had started for some time...or is it even the same one like this one...cannot remember).
I wish I was smart enough to understand the issue.
No, no, I wished I was....people which make such a great program (there is not better one, even one that is as good) must be extremely smart, I would think.

No, no, I am afraid, I am the personalized bug here. I just will use the columns like they occur here (at least as long as they appear here at all).

This is what we currently get as a column view when we first call bookmark A (with columns) and then filter X (with columns):
Combination of self-defined columns -> 3. Bookmark A + Filter X. For me, this is an unexpected result.

I would like to raise the following for discussion:
If a filter with columns is called, I would expect only the columns from the filter to be displayed.
In addition, however, one should be able to manually specify a command, e.g. columns:name;path;size;date-modified;width;height
so that additional columns can be displayed in such a case.

Code: Select all

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Bookmark A 2. Filter X 3. Bookmark A + Filter X
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name Name Name
Available Free Disk Size	Path Path
Used Disk Size Extension Extension
Total Disk Size Size Available Free Disk Size
Size Date Modified Used Disk Size
Date Indexed Date Created Total Disk Size
Date Accessed Date Accessed Size
Date Created Title Title
Date Modified Subject Subject
Volume Label Tags Tags
Full Path Comment Comment
				Authors Authors
File List Filename File List Filename
								Date Indexed
								Date Accessed
								Date Created
								Date Modified
								Volume Label
								Full Path
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we call up Bookmark A (with columns) and then Bookmark B (with columns),
then there is NO combination of columns but only the columns of bookmark B are displayed!
For me, this is an expected result.

I'll get back to you later in more detail on the topic of "Custom column views" - it will take a while...

PS:
I think the column setup is working properly - please see this picture.

This is my current understanding/proposal/contribution to discussion:

A) Introduction
  1. Each '[Custom] columns view' remains until it is replaced by another '[Custom] columns view' which differs from the previous one.
  2. Column views can be defined for a BOOKMARK, a FILTER and in addition to these added temporarily
by right-clicking on column header > Add Columns...
  3. Filter "Everything" - has as DEFAULT view: "Columns: (No change)" and columns: Name, Path, Size, Date Modified.

B) Practical examples
  1. Bookmark A with columns is shown -> Bookmark B with columns is called up:
Only columns from bookmark B should be displayed. (This already works).
  2. Bookmark A with columns is shown -> Filter "Everything" with columns is called up:
Only columns from filter "Everything" should be displayed.
  3. Bookmark A with columns is shown -> Filter "Everything" WITHOUT columns <DEFAULT: "Columns: (No change)"> is called:
Due to the setting "Columns: (No change)", the columns of bookmark A should be still displayed.
  4. Bookmark A with columns is shown -> Filter "Everything" WITH self-defined columns is called:
    Name;Path;Extension;Size;Date Modified;Date Created;Date Accessed;...
Only columns from filter "Everything" should be displayed. ...
  5. Analogously, the predicted also applies to every other filter, e.g.
Bookmark A with columns is shown -> Filter "MyFilter" with columns is called:
Only columns of filter "MyFilter" should be displayed.
  6. Filter "MyPersonalFilter" with columns is shown -> Bookmark B with columns is called up:
Only columns from Bookmark B should be displayed.
  7. Filter "Everything" without columns <DEFAULT: "Columns: (No change)"> is shown -> Bookmark B WITH columns is called up:
Only columns of bookmark B should be displayed.
  8. Filter "Everything" without columns <DEFAULT: "Columns: (No change)"> is shown -> Bookmark B WITHOUT columns is called up:
The column view remains as it is.

C) Final remarks
  1. Whenever switching to another bookmark or filter where columns have been defined, that differ from the previous column view,
these columns should be displayed AND the previously displayed column view should be removed completely. ...
  2. The user has the possibility to temporarily set additional columns by right-clicking on the column header > Add Columns...
  3. Automatically combined column views (bookmarks + columns AND filters + columns) can thus be avoided.
In my opinion, these only lead to confusion.
  4. In my opinion, it is highly recommended to set up a hotkey for the filter "Everything",
to be able to return to its [self-defined] default view at any time.
An example has been given here.

My one thought to contribute.

If you have a set of column headers that you like as a default, you should set them up in your Options > General > Home > Column: settings.

Every time you open a new Everything window, you will be presented with your default columns just the way you like it. No frustration.

This has served me very well.

Thank you for mentioning! :)

I guess I bookmarked the "Everything" filter back then because I didn't succeed
- despite identical settings (filter "Everything" | bookmark with filter "Everything") - to achieve,
that after calling up the "Everything" filter, options such as "Match Case", "Match Path", etc. can be switched off using the drop-down arrow.
If I call up the bookmark with the "Everything" filter, then the options mentioned are removed.

Filter
  1. In my opinion, in addition to the selection points under Edit Filter > Columns: (No change), Add columns...,
there should be a possibility to set a default column view, because otherwise the column view would always remain -
e.g. with (No change) always remains from the last column view and cannot be switched off.

    Example:
Change from Filter AND column view "Document" to "Audio".

    Suggestion:
I therefore propose a new menu item for columns to be set as the default value.
The name could be "Default", "Everything" or whatever you like.
In the example image I have used the term "Default".
This new menu item is to be used for the filters as well as for the bookmarks.
    Remark:
In this way it could be generally guaranteed that when changing the column view there is also a removal
of the previous column view *if applicable*.

    2022-12-16_Columns (Default)_new menu item.png (22.43 KiB) Viewed 3308 times

  2. When changing from filter A with columns to filter B with other columns, it is currently not taken into account,
that in my opinion the columns of filter B should be displayed in this case.
Shortcuts
At present, there is no check whether a shortcut has already been assigned.
This means, for example, that the shortcut ALT+Y can be defined for both a bookmark and a filter.
Currently, the shortcut is applied to the bookmark and has no effect on the filter.
I just wanted to mention it.

Please check.
Thanks!

I will consider an option to choose between "Add columns" and "Set columns" for filters.

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions.

Column sets are still on my TODO list.
You'll be able to define column sets and reference them from filters/bookmarks.

Thanks, but I think that such a separation is not necessary.
Here I have concretised my proposal again and adapted the picture once more.

Yes.
I currently switch between column views using the intermediate step with a bookmark, as shown here under point 2.

there should be a possibility to set a default column view, because otherwise the column view would always remain -
e.g. with (No change) always remains from the last column view and cannot be switched off.
The columns you add with filters are temporary.
As soon as you change the filter, the columns are restored.

Example usage:
Everything is showing the default column view as defined under Tools -> Options -> Home -> Columns.
You set a filter that adds the width, height and length columns.
The Width, Height and Length columns are added. (Using the last position and width)
You change to another filter.
The default column view is restored. (the newly selected filter may add different temporary columns)

There are some strange quirks when using columns with filters.
When the filter with columns is active, all columns are treated as temporary.
So you can't make any permanent changes to your visible columns.

I may replace the filters "add temporary columns" with a select "column set" option.
I will consider a "use home columns"/default-column-view option.

@Biff
Please try changing columns to (No Change) for all your filters:
  • In Everything, from the Search menu, click Organize filters....
  • For each filter:
    • Set columns to: (No Change)
  • Click OK.
There might be an issue here if you had an active filter with columns before opening your bookmark?

Shortcuts

Currently, the shortcut is applied to the bookmark and has no effect on the filter.
I just wanted to mention it.
The next alpha update will show existing bookmark/filter keyboard shortcut conflicts.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Basically, I consider ANY COLUMN VIEW to be TEMPORARY, regardless of whether the columns are displayed by a bookmark, a filter,
or otherwise additionally displayed, added (e.g. add-columns:) or removed (e.g. remove-columns:).
TEMPORARY, because the column view remains until it is replaced by another column view.

When changing column views - generated by a filter or bookmark - call - in my opinion the previous column view should be
EXITED by DEFAULT and the new column view should be created WITHOUT adding any [self defined] columns from the previous view.
The only EXCEPTION: If a filter or bookmark is set to "Columns: (No change)" ... -OR- ... if there is a (new) setting for this
in the Everything.ini.

The default columns of the filter "Everything", namely "Name", "Path", "Extension"*, "Size", "Date Modified"
should still be displayed together with the applied filter, e.g. "Picture", "Audio", etc. (This is currently the case).

*Mmmh, interestingly, the column "Extension" is not available in the default filter "Everything".
In my opinion, this field should be added there.

--------------------------------------
Supplementary comments on:
"the newly selected filter may ADD different temporary columns"

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here, but in my opinion this option should - if at all - only be offered as an additional option,
e.g. in the Everything.ini ... -OR- ... preferably with "Columns: (No change)".

Reasons:
  • When I set columns for the filter "Picture" and call this filter, I only want to see these columns
and not columns from the previous filter, e.g. of documents, etc. (Other users may have a different expectation here).
  • Example: There are picture/video and audio files in a folder.
    - Filter "Picture" shows only picture files - corresponding columns have been defined for this purpose.
    - Filter "Video" shows only video files - for this, corresponding columns have been defined
    - Filter "Audio" shows only audio files - columns have been defined for this.
For me it would also not be desirable if columns for filter "Picture" AND columns for filter "Audio" were displayed at the same time.
  • The user can use various commands, e.g. add-columns:, remove-columns: to set up the column view as he or she wishes.
If they want to see the additional columns set up permanently, then he/she can simply add them directly to the bookmarks or filters.
  • As has already been shown in practice, this currently available option (combined columns views) can lead to great confusion.
void wrote: Mon Dec 19, 2022 3:30 am I will consider a "use home columns"/default-column-view option.
It would be enough for me if the "Everything" filter in this case does what a bookmark can already do ...

"default-column-view option" - with bookmark -> The same function is desired for the "Everything" filter:
  • Filter "Everything" is called with default settings
  • Filter "Everything" with default columns: "Name", "Path", "Extension"*, "Size", "Date Modified"
    * Suggestion: Add column "Extension".
  • Empty the search box (delete search query) and position the cursor in the search box
  • REMOVE all options that can be switched on, for example, by right-clicking on the status bar, i.e.
e.g. Enable Result Omissions**, Match Case, Match Diacritics, Match Whole Word, Match Path, Match Prefix, Match Suffix,
Ignore Punctuation, Ignore White-space. Further: Enable Regex, all filters <> the "Everything" filter.

    ** Enable Result Omissions:
This is currently the only parameter that CANNOT be removed from the bookmark ALT+Y (default customns view).
It would be desirable if you called the "Everything" filter or a bookmark defined analogously to it,
that you could also remove this option from a default customns view.

Filter "Everything"
Tools -> Options -> Home ... vs ... Filter "Everything".

Filter Everything in Everything Options & Organize Filters.png
Filter Everything in Everything Options & Organize Filters.png (75.18 KiB) Viewed 3183 times

  1. There is only one filter "Everything".

  2. The options in Tools -> Options -> Home ... -AND- ... Filter "Everything" are displayed differently and have different fields.
I therefore propose to adapt these setting masks - mainly to the "Edit Bookmark" format.
Example: dropdown field with content ((No change), Enabled, Disabled).

  3. It is currently possible, for example, to set different columns in Tools -> Options -> Home -> Columns or the "Everything" filter.
In my opinion, this should not be allowed.
If someone makes changes to the "Everything" filter under Tools -> Options -> Home,
then these should change automatically mirror after "Edit Filter".
The same applies in the opposite case: if changes are made under "Edit Filter",
then these should be automatically mirror to Tools -> Options -> Home -> e.g. Columns.
The same should also apply to other filters defined under Tools -> Options -> Home -> Filter.

Another IDEA might be the following:
Tools -> Options -> Home ... only the following should be displayed here:
Filter: dropdown field, e.g. with Everything as default filter.
Index: dropdown field, e.g. with Local database as default value ... and everything that comes after.
The fields "Match case:", "Match diacritics:", etc. could be removed and space made available for eventual
    other future options are used.
The "Restore Defaults" button would no longer be available here for the "Everything" filter.
However, the question arises for me whether such a button is even needed for a filter,
because it is also not available for the other filters for understandable reasons.
In such a case, different settings would be avoided in any case.

Thank you for the feedback tuska,
*Mmmh, interestingly, the column "Extension" is not available in the default filter "Everything".
In my opinion, this field should be added there.
I will consider showing the extension column by default.
I'm not too keen on doing this as the extension is already included under the Name column.
I understand some users will like to sort by extension.

You can always add the Extension column to your home columns.

** Enable Result Omissions:
I will consider an option to set result omissions from a bookmark.

For now, please add the following to your bookmark search:
/omit_results=0

Press Alt + Enter at the end of /omit_results=0 to add a new line
This will clear the search when opening the bookmark. (otherwise the search is not changed)

You can set any view options this way.

Filters are very different to home/bookmarks.

Ideally filters are designed to limit your results to a specific file type. (eg: audio/video)
Not to change your result view.
Use bookmarks to change your view.

It is currently possible, for example, to set different columns in Tools -> Options -> Home -> Columns or the "Everything" filter.
In my opinion, this should not be allowed.
I think it's fine to allow filters to ADD to the current columns. (not set the columns)
This is how it's currently designed.
You can have your home/bookmarks columns and have filters temporarily ADD to these columns.

I will consider removing filter columns once I have added column sets.

If the user wants to override home/bookmark columns by using the columns: search function in a filter, I won't stop them.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Everything 1.5.0.1332a will now show existing bookmark/filter keyboard shortcut conflicts.
