How to select a single item when "single click" mode is active

Post by Raindrops »

I have activated single-click mode in Folder options.
I have deselected the Full row select option.

Under these settings, I am finding it difficult to select any given item.

If I hover my mouse over any item in the Name field, it is supposed to select the item. But this does not happen.

I tried CTRL+Click, but it launches the item with associated app.

How do I select a given item?

Option 1:

- Go to menu:Tools > Options > General > Keyboard
- Type toggle select in the Show commands containing: box.
- Select Result List | Hot Item | Toggle Select
- set it to (for example) SPACE (Resultlist)

Now you can hover a filename and press 'SPACE' to (de-) select it.

Option 2:

- Have patience. Item check boxes (like in Windows Explorer) are on the todo-list

Option 3:
(not a very practical one):

- press the right-mouse button
- drag around the file(s) you want to select (I think this is called lasso-ing)
- release mouse button
- click the title bar to get rid of the appearing context menu.
- USe CTRL + right-mouse button to add another range of files.

Thanks for these tips!

Option 1 works for me. But still that's not same as "select on hover"!
Option 2 defeats the purpose of the "select on hover" feature, of avoiding clicks.
Option 3 is for selecting multiple items, while I am looking for selecting a single item.

What is this "select on hover" feature? Never heard of it.

I meant the Folder option:
  • Open (launch) an item with a single click
  • Select an item by hovering the mouse on it
  • Hold down SHFT or CTRL to expand the selection by hovering the mouse over other items

I had no idea this feature existed in Windows! Thanks Raindrops; learned something mnew today..

This isn't implemented in Everything, as you already found out.

Like Windows Explorer, Everything will only select an item when the result list has focus and you hover over an item.
Does hover-selecting work when the result list has focus?

If you are not using full-row-select, you'll need to hover over the name text or icon.

Everything will use the system default hover time-out.

The system default hover time-out is initially the menu drop-down time, which is 400 milliseconds.
Has this system setting been changed?

By default, Everything should select your item when the result list has focus and you hover the cursor over the item for at least 400 milliseconds.
Using CTRL + hover will toggle the selection.
Using SHIFT + hover will extend the selection.

You can override the system single click setting in Everything under Tools -> Options -> Results -> Single click open.

Does hover-selecting work when the result list has focus?
There you are!

The root cause is that the Result Panel never had the focus.

I am used to a feature in FreeCommander, where the focus is automatically shifted to the pane on which the mouse is hovering.
I thought that Everything does the same, because if I move the mouse over any item in the Result List, its background color changes.
(If the panel does not have focus, why should this happen??)

The other factors are ok:
  • My "single click open" setting is set to system default (which means Everything is in single click mode).
  • I have not changed the time-out.
  • My Full row select option is disabled.
  • I always hover on the Name column.
To sum up, can you add the feature that when we hover the mouse on any panel, it should get the focus?
(There can be a user-settable delay to ensure that the focus does not change unintentionally.)

The next alpha update will auto focus the result list on hover when single click is enabled.

Thank you for the suggestion.

That's wonderful!

BTW Everything enters single click mode in two different ways:
1. When the value of the Single click open drop down is set to 'single click'
2. When the value of the Single click open drop down is set to 'use system settings' and the Folder options is set to 'single click' mode.

Everything should switch focus automatically on hover in BOTH cases.

Come to think of it, why can't we have automatic switching of focus even when the Windows/Everything is in double-click mode?
These features don't interfere with each other!

Everything 1.5.0.1336a will now focus the result list when hovering over an item.

I will consider options to focus the search box and other widgets on hover.
(and to focus the result list when in double click mode)

Thank you for the suggestions.

I tried the feature in 1336a. It works, but there is a problem: My workflow is to select a text in browser (or other app) and then press CTRL+C, then press CTRL+SpaceBar hotkey to launch Everything, and then immediately press SHFT+CTRL+V hotkey to paste the string in the Search Bar.

In the whole process, the mouse pointer remains somewhere in the middle of the screen. And that is the problem: When I press the second hotkey (CTRL+SpaceBar), the Everything window comes to front. It immediately senses that the mouse pointer is on the Results Panel, and shifts the focus from Search Bar to Results Pane.

So when I press my third hotkey (CTRL+V), I end up pasting the clipboard content in the Results Panel!

Then I have to manually click in the Search Bar and then press CTRL+V.

Thus, my streamlined workflow is interrupted.

To solve this, when Everything window is launched, please snap the mouse to its Search Bar.

Thank you for the issue report Raindrops,

The next alpha update will not hover-select an item until you move the cursor after the search window gains focus.

I will consider an option to snap the cursor to the search bar.

That's excellent.

Can you please set a user-settable delay after window gains focus and mouse moves?
If the user moves his mouse accidentally (or brushes his palm on the touchpad), Everything should ignore it during this delay period.

Everything 1.5.0.1337a will now only hover-select an item when the cursor has moved after the search window is activated.

I will consider adding a delay to prevent hover after the search window is activated.
Thank you for the suggestion.
