BUG: The Remove button is always grayed out in "Index > NTFS" screen of Settings

Post by Raindrops »

The Options > Indexes > NTFS screen cannot remove volumes from the list.
When we select any of the drives, the Remove button remains grayed out. (see (1) in the screenshot)

Actually I am not sure why that Remove button is provided in the first place, because detailed settings for the selected volume are already provided below. (see (2) in screenshot).
  • We can stop indexing the selected drive using the Include in database checkbox.
  • We can include only some parts of it using the Include only... control.
So what is the purpose of the Remove button?
  • If the intent is to list all available drives (including removable drives that may not be connected at this moment), then this button is not needed at all!
  • if I select the Automatically add new removable volumes, then there is no point in removing such a volume, because Everything will add it back when I plug it in.

Everything will keep offline volumes in your index.

Use the Remove button to remove offline volumes from your index.
The Remove button is only clickable for offline volumes.

The remove button will reset the "Include in database" checkbox.
The next time the volume is inserted it might be auto-included.
Leaving "Include in database" unchecked is needed to exclude unwanted volumes.

I have on my TODO list to move the "Include in database" checkbox to the listview.
(so you can see which volumes are included at a glance)

Examples:
Your H: drive dies and you no longer want to keep the H: drive in your index, select your H: drive and click Remove.
You never want your H: drive included in your index, select your H: drive and uncheck Include in database.

Thanks for the clarification! Yes, it makes immense sense!
It will be more efficient to explain such subtle behavior through a help wiki.
Discussing such details here at the forum only bloats it up and makes it more and more difficult to discover whatever we are searching for.

You could start the wiki and let some of users to author it collaboratively.
Its TOC can go on evolving.
Features like "convert to pdf" can be added later.
What do you think?

I think it's a good idea and am happy to try it.

I've put on my TODO list to create a community wiki.
I did get one going yesterday, but it broke the forums..
I'll keep working on it..

If it breaks the forum, can it be made a separate entity?

Community Wiki added here:

https://www.voidtools.com/wiki/

You'll need to create a wiki account to create/edit wiki pages.

Thank you for helping with the Everything documentation!

I'd also like to ask for "Fixed" and "Removable" added to the listview, since this is non-obvious anywhere on the UI but essential to understanding the checkboxes for which disks get automatically indexed and which do not.

I'll put this on my TODO list.

Thank you for the suggestion.

For now, this information is available under Tools -> Debug -> Statistics.
