Edge WebView2 hijacked preview mode?

I recently updated Windows 10 and since then, the preview pane in Everything Search appears as "dark mode" even though I don't have that set anywhere that would affect it.

ALSO, it now takes between 1 and 2 seconds to display the simplest of text files, showing a "LOADING" progress bar that slowly traverses the preview window... so before I could scroll with the down arrow key and see text files pop up instantly, now each... file... takes... for... ever... to... display... It has had a REAL and NEGATIVE impact on my productivity.

• Is there any way to permanently disable this terrible piece of the Microsoft Edge browser?
• Is there any way to set the preview mode back to the way Everything Search worked before being hijacked?

...and if I can't get rid of this piece of garbage from MS...
• Is there any to set the WebView2 to NOT use "dark mode" so I can see it in the blindingly white interface of Everything Search?

Everything uses the preview handler that is defined by Windows (exception: some common image formats; Everything handles those by itself).
You probably will see the same behaviour (slow, dark mode) in File Explorer's preview.


Any specific file extensions where you see this behaviour? Preview handlers are most of time based on the program that is configured to open files of this extension.
So my first guess would be that this update changed the default program to open this type of files.
Changing the default program back to whatr it was should fix it in most cases.


There are more options to change the preview handlers (also posted on these forums), but please try this first.

If you restart your computer into Safe Mode, is there any change?

What version of Everything are you using?

There's a few issues with previewing on 1.5.0.1336a-1.5.0.1337a.
I hope to have a fix soon.

Primarily text files — *.TXT and related, like *.HTM — *.HTML — *.JS etc.

The default program handlers are exactly what they have been for years, until Everything Search decided to use ONLY Microsoft Edge WebView2 as the preview handler. If I double-click on any returned *.TXT file, it opens with the expected program, instantly, and not in "dark mode".

I haven't restarted in Safe Mode. It's unnecessary to do so when every other avenue of *.TXT previewing and loading act normally — even using Microsoft Edge... the offending program, which displays *.TXT files instantly as white text on a black background with no code formatting.

It seems ONLY Everything Search is doing the "dark mode" formatting. Even the JavaScript syntax coloring is unique and distinct from all of the tools I normally use to edit that format (MS Visual Studio / VS Code / Notepad++)

Is Everything running as administrator?

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

My default, long-time installation preferences (and verified for current installation) matches what you suggest: I'm running Everything as a Service, not as an Administrator.
