Keyboard chortcut changes
Keyboard chortcut changes
Is there a way to keep up with changes to keyboard shortcuts in v1.5? I think there have been some changes over time, such as to shortcuts for copying a path of an entry in the result list.
PS: PLEASE include a facility in keyboard options to enter a shortcut key combination and then see which command is associated with it. At the moment I have to pretend to create a new shortcut (for some dummy command chosen at random) in order to see what key combo is allocated to it.

Have some keyboard shortcuts in v1.5 been reassigned at any time during its development?
Re: Keyboard chortcut changes

Re: Keyboard chortcut changes
I have created some new keyboard shortcuts to previously unassigned functions.
I have also created some new keyboard shortcuts by replacing some standard assignments.
This could be be hard to untangle in the final version! More so, if the standard shortcut assignments have changed during development. Is there any chance of having an Everything utility to help? Perhaps it could list all of a users's shortcut assignments to allow the user to make any final modifications
Re: Keyboard chortcut changes
There's currently the about:keys search command:
Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
about:keys
Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
This will show all your keyboard shortcuts.
I will consider showing user-changed keys in bold.
I will consider a tool to help migrating to Everything 1.5.
Thank you for the suggestion.
For now, please consider running a diff on your keys and the default keys:

Re: Keyboard shortcut changes between instances
[Posted within this thread on managing shortcuts]
Is there a way to copy changes to keyboard shortcuts from one instance to another?
I have two instances of Everything, each of which indexes different volumes. When i make keyboard shortcut changes to one instance, then I would like to see them in the other instance.
What's the easiest way of doing this, apart from manually making a change in both instances?

Re: Keyboard chortcut changes
Keyboard shortcuts are all stored together in your Everything.ini
Exit Everything, copy the keys from your old Everything.ini, paste them into the new Everything.ini:
Exit Everything, copy the keys from your old Everything.ini, paste them into the new Everything.ini:
- Make sure Everything is not running before copying/pasting to the Everything.ini (File -> Exit)
- Open your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini (Everything-1.5a.ini for the 1.5 alpha) on the old PC.
- Scroll down to:
file_new_search_window_keys - Select from file_new_search_window_keys to folders_up_one_dir_keys (select all the entries ending with _keys)
- Copy to the clipboard and close the old ini.
- Open your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini (Everything-1.5a.ini for the 1.5 alpha) on the new PC.
- Paste the keys at the bottom of the Everything.ini (this will overwrite any values above)
- Save changes and restart Everything.

Re: Keyboard chortcut changes
In this post I suggested a utility and wrote it in MSWord/VBA.
I understand that we have about:keys and default settings and the like, but that is static data, and does not necessarily reflect the current state of the device.
I too feel that there is a need for interrogating "what key combinations are available?" at any time of day; that is, a report on the current state of the set of combinations.
In the past month I wrote a utility in MSWord/VBA to list all currently UN-assigned combinations, based on volunteering a set of all combinations and the settings stored somewhere (in the INI file or about:keys )
The user nominates the universe of combinations (For example any combinations of Ctrl; Shift; Alt but NOT Ctrl+Shift+Alt. For example any combinations that does NOT include the mouse wheel).
For anyone planning a project that uses shortcut keys this data enables a quick view to see where the largest set of unassigned combinations lies.
When we want to, say, assign shortcuts to our favorite bookmarks, it makes sense to assign a block of combinations so that as much as possible all the bookmarks employ the same structure, thus all mapped with Ctrl+Alt, or all mapped with Shift+Alt, and so on.
Cheers, Chris
