search in PDF not working

Post by Armagnac »

Hello,

I've problems with the search functionality in PDF files. I'm using windows 10 (incl. all updates) and everything version Version 1.4.1.924 (x64).

When I'm looking for a special text string in PDF files it is not found with the CONTENT function. Even when I limit the search to one specific PDF file the string is not found. To check that the pdf is searchable I used adobe or foxit. Both of these programs are able to find the text.
Any ideas what I can try?

Look what PDF IFilter you have installed.
Can be viewed and changed with the NirSoft tool SearchFilterView.

Hi Karl,

My example string is "VALUTA".
Update to the current version does not change something.

I've done the standard installation of the program and changed nothing. So I'm not aware of installing any filters.

But I found out something strange. My example PDF-document has 37 pages. I splittet it to single pages. So my folder contains 38 files, the splittet ones and the original one.
My above mentioned text string "VALUTA" is on every page of the file. So I expected 38 entries in the result list. But I only get one (from the original file). Not an entry from the splitted ones.
The splitted ones are searchable with Adobe or Foxit.

I googled "VALUTA" and entered the following text in German language first into a Word document
and then immediately saved it as "VALUTA.pdf":
"Anhand der VALUTA – auch Wertstellung genannt – erkennen Sie, wann Zahlungseingänge und Abbuchungen wertmäßig erfolgen.
Es handelt sich dabei um das Datum, ab dem eine Kontobewegung wirksam wird. Die VALUTA zeigt Ihnen also den echten Kontostand an".
I then opened the file "VALUTA.pdf" in Adobe Acrobat 11.0 Pro - version 11.0.23 and searched for the term "VALUTA".
The search term was found twice.
Furthermore I saved a scanned image as searchable pdf in Adobe and e.g. the search term "Abschnitt" was found in
Adobe Acrobat 11.0 Pro - version 11.0.23.
Additionally I searched and found the above mentioned terms with the file manager "Total Commander" and the plugin "xPDFSearch".

SearchFilterView v1.00 Copyright (c) 2010 Nir Sofer
... brings the following result for this application: Adobe Acrobat 11.0 Pro - version 11.0.23 ... regarding IFILTER:

Code: Select all

File Description	Product name	File version	Version Supplier
PDFFilter.dll	PDF Filter	PDF IFilter	11.0.01.36	11.0.01.36	Adobe Systems, Inc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Path
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms\bin\PDFFilter.dll
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extension	Typname Description Content type
.pdf AcroExch.Document	Adobe Acrobat Document	application/pdf
In 'Everything' entering e.g.
"D:\zzz\" ext:pdf content:Valuta
... OR ...
"D:\zzz\" ext:pdf content:VALUTA

finds the file "VALUTA.pdf"(!) and with "View" - "Preview" the content of the file can be viewed.

For the sake of order, however, I must mention that I had a few failed attempts before,
which were inexplicable to me. Only for this reason I also did a content search with "Total Commander".

I think an installation of iFilter is required to find texts in pdf documents via content searching in 'Everything'.

I googled an interesting article on this topic [with download link]: Adobe iFilter for 64-bit systems
German language
Google translator (German -> English)
Pay attention to the notes, for example on "iFilter from Adobe in the 32-bit version"!

I wish you success!

Good morning,

Problem solved. Thank you ALL for your help. Finally the missing ifilter solved the problem.

Before I installed the ifilter (thank you tuska) I tried the search with TotalCommander. Here all entries were correctly found (without ifilter).
Then I installed the ifilter and get now correct results in everything.

Nevertheless I think it's strange that in my test case I found one entry for the original file but no entries for the splitted ones. But now it'S ok.

I'm happy now that my favorite program works fine again.

Best regards and stay healthy,
