New behaviour in opening files

Post by robbyell »

Hi all - wonderful piece of software of which you should all be proud.

Recently (and I don't think I've either applied an update or tweaked any settings), MS Excel files, rather than opening in the same instance of Excel, open a new instance when I double-click them in the Everything search results.

What options/preferences do I need to adjust to get Everything to open in the existing instance of Excel?

Thank you for your feedback.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Does the issue persist?

Thanks for your quick response - I unchecked "run as admin" (everything else was as needed) but the issue still persists!

Please try restarting your PC.

There might be an Excel process still running as administrator.

That's done the trick - now back to how we were before - thanks very much.

I must have clicked to run as admin then at some point. Why would I have done that? I use multiple instances for eg specific searches of music / videos which I think asks for admin rights suring setup - could that be it? Anyway, all sorted, so thanks again.

Older versions (1.4.1.895) would prompt to run as administrator if the Everything Service was stopped.

It's likely the Everything Service was stopped at some stage and you clicked OK to run as administrator.
