crashes on typing in W10

Post by Popje »

Hello, thank you for reading.
First of all thank you so much at Voidtools for this wonderful program.

I went back from horrible Windows 11 to 10 but I am having problems (maybe since an update, not sure) that when I type random words it starts to crash while typing out the full word.

I am trying to start it again but it won't do the word.

I try to cheat my way and copy the word in one go which worked sometimes but in the end it just crashes hard and the program finds itself rebuilding the index or something, I forgot.

Please see if disabling shell extensions helps:
  • Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
    /icon_shell_extensions=0
  • Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
  • If successful, icon_shell_extensions=0 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.

Please try forcing a rebuild:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.

Does the issue persist?

Are you viewing as thumbnails? (View -> Thumbnails)
Are you showing the preview pane? (View -> Preview)
Is a crash dialog shown?

If you are using Everything 1.5, please try disabling icons:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select icons.
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.

I turned the thumbnails off for a few tries only but didn't seem to crash and with thumbnails on it crashed again. I rebooted entire PC even after that commandline just to be sure nothing was left from the crash

Sounds like a bad thumbnail handler is installed.

Please try disabling thumbnail handlers with ShellExView.

Please let us know if you find the problem thumbnail handler.

Thnx so far

what are the thumbnail handlers? Is that from the program itself?
I need to see pictures and STL 3 files for instance.

Everything uses the system to render thumbnails.

Third party thumbnails handlers can be installed.

ShellExView has the option to disable/re-enable these thumbnail handlers.

In ShellExView, sort by Type.
Disable one thumbnail handler at a time.
See if Everything crashes with thumbnails shown.

I think the problem is with: STLThumbWinShellExtension.STLThumbnailProvider Class

I installed something from GitHub because Windows always has problems with showing 3D thumbnails from .STL files .3MF .OBJ etc in explorer after installing 3D programs or just in general.
Another problem is that Windows 11 and 10 constantly ask for JPG, video etc. what program to open with while there are clearly programs in the Default Apps select what to do. That could also be related to crashes.

So hopeless this Windows, 11 was just horrible and turned a high end computer into a 286

I don't know if you have any suggestions what to do but it's outside of the Everything program, I guess.
I disabled it but wonder what happens after the reboot if it would still show the STL thumbnails as real-time 3D objects on the icon or that I have to turn it back on or that it will automatically be turned on after exiting the ShellExView.

Nice little program in the collection btw
