Results show a valid path, not a path that does not exist

Post by Earl »

Maybe a stupid question but I do not know enough about Everything yet.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but when I get results back I can do things with the results but not all of them. Many results when I click them say that windows cannot find the path to the result, it rings a bell and shows a red cross. And it is correct, the path does not exist (anymore).

I want to see only real paths that work, not ones that cannot be found.
Is there a way to do that, I cannot find it yet.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Please try forcing a rebuild:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Click Force Rebuild.
  • Click OK.

Does the issue persist?

Hello (David?)

It works now.

The first part of the fix, was good, I did not have to change anything.
The second part did the trick, Rebuilding.

I have never done a rebuilding, so I am thinking I should do that sometimes? Or not?
Could it be also that I am searching a lot of data (Terabytes)?

Greeting and many THANKS for your help, if this continues to work it will save me much time.

Generally, no.

You shouldn't need to perform a manual reindex.

Everything 1.4 doesn't track changes to hard links. (Everything 1.5 will)
Everything doesn't detect deleted hard links.

It can sometimes help to force a rebuild to detect these changes.

Excluded files/folders are not automatically reindexed when the should be included.
If you have enabled any exclude filters under Tools -> Options -> Exclude, it can sometimes be necessary to force a rebuild to find files/folders that should be included.

Tracking changes to NTFS volumes will be slightly improved in Everything 1.5.
