How stable is the current version?

Post by Destroy666 »

Hello, as a long-term user of this software, who would rate it as top 3 most useful Windows software, I'd like to ask if it's worth upgrading to 1.5 alpha at this moment. I'd love features such as tabs and dark mode. It has been in alpha for few years now and I don't see it coming out anytime soon. But how safe is it to use on a live system? Any potential for crashes, file issues or anything alike?

Thanks.

It's stable and has so many better functions compared to the 1.4.
Myself and many others here on this board use the 1.5 version without any big problems since a long time.
Bugs are usually fixed in short time.
So I suggest to only use the 1.5 line and follow the Alpha updates.

Ok, thanks.

Do all the settings get automigrated? Is it better to uninstall first? Any approximate prediction when the fully stable version might come?

A stable version will not come in the near future.
Settings are not migrated because versions 1.4 and 1.5 can run in parallel.

I suggest uninstalling the 1.4 version first but save all your ini and csv files.

Install the newest x64 Alpha (currently 1.5.0.1375a)
- Let it install the Service
- Start Everything on System startup (under Tools / Options / General)

Use Tools / Import and Export settings to import your old ini file.
Also copy your filters.csv over (only if you made your own filters).

I strong suggest the following entry in your new Everything ini file
alpha_instance=0
This will allow es.exe and any 3rd party tool (eg. Total Commander or XYplorer)
to find the running Everything without setting the Alpha Instance name.

I have been using the alpha version since at least 1.5.0.1315a

Since I switched I never though of going back to 1.4 - nor I experienced some lost due to Everything being the culprit
