Bizarre behaviour

Post by terrypin »

I type 'bl' as my search target. A screen of hits appears. About 300ms later it closes. I click the Everything icon in my tray and the program reappears, with an empty search field. 'bl' again causes same result. So does 'bm'. And 'bh', and 'bi'... But not 'bn' or 'bo' or bq' ...

Baffled, but thinking that it may be due to certain files being included in the hits I snatched this PrintScreen of 'bl' results before they vanished:

Does that offer any clue? Otherwise I'm baffled how to isolate and fix.

If it's relevant, I have about 6 M files.

Please try disabling icon shell extensions:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select: icon_shell_extensions
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.
Does the issue persist?

Thank you - that fixed it!

But I'd never have found it myself. How could the crashing have arisen? Why that particular selection of characters (and presumably more)? Is there anything else I should do to prevent it happening again?

Let's try to work out what shell extension is causing the issue as it will likely be making Windows Explorer unstable too..

Please try re-enabling icon shell extensions:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select: icon_shell_extensions
  • Set the value to: true
  • Click OK.

See if the issue occurs with the following searches:

*.js bl
*.hex bl
*.jpg bl
pathlen:>259

Does the issue occur?

If the issue occurs, please try toggling icon shell extensions with ShellExView.
Disable any Icon Handlers.
Please let us know what you find.

No, none of those caused the issue. For now I've left the setting at true.

Puzzling indeed! I'm happy to try as many other tests as you want.
