W11 black screen crash when searching NAS via SMB

Post by jaldipc »

Whenever I add a network folder from my Synology NAS to the Everything Search Engine and start typing a search query, my Windows 11 PC crashes with a black screen and reboots. This isn't just the Everything software crashing; it's the entire PC, and it happens consistently whenever I start typing a search query. No error messages or warnings appear before the crash, and no other software causes this issue. The problem remains even after a fresh install of Windows 11.

Technical Details

PC Hardware
  • Processor: Intel Core i9-14900K, 3200 MHz, 24 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)
  • Motherboard: Z790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 (latest firmware to address Intel Core i9-14900K stability issues related to elevated voltages)
Operating System
  • OS Name: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
  • Version: 10.0.22631 Build 22631
  • OS activation and functionality are confirmed for all other applications.
  • Fresh Windows 11 install tested, but the issue persists.
  • Enabled SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support (SMB 1.0/CIFS Client), but no change.
Everything Search Engine Software
  • Fresh Windows 11 reinstall tested with Everything 1.4.1.1026 portable in both x86 and 64-bit versions.
  • Previous install used the Everything installer with identical crash results.
  • Both versions of Everything produce the same crash behavior.
Steps to Reproduce
  1. Open Everything Search Engine.
  2. Go to Options > Indexes > Folders.
  3. Add the network folder: \\Eggnog\Shared (Synology NAS shared folder).
  4. Index builds successfully, Everything appears functional.
  5. After a few searches, Windows 11 crashes to a black screen and reboots.
NAS Details
  • Device: Synology DS918+ NAS
  • Operating System: DSM 7 (latest version)
  • SMB Settings: Enabled with SMB 2 and SMB 3 compatibility.
Additional Observations
  • No error logs or crash dump files are generated.
  • Other applications accessing the NAS do not trigger crashes.
  • All drivers and firmware are fully updated.
  • Issue is isolated to Everything Search Engine when network folder is added.
Request for Assistance

Any insights or suggestions on resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone encountered similar issues with Everything Search Engine on Windows 11 when using network folders? Are there any known compatibility concerns with Synology NAS or specific SMB settings?

A bad shell icon extension can cause Everything to crash when changing the search.

Please try disabling icon shell extensions in Everything:
  • In Everything 1.5, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab on the left.
  • To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
    icon
  • Select: icon_shell_extensions
  • Set the value to: false
  • Click OK.
Does the issue persist?

Disabling icon_shell_extensions seems to have fixed the issue! I'll keep testing it to make sure, but so far, it is working when it would have crashed for sure before. Thank you!
