Index journal - keeping entries

Post by harryray2 »

I have an instance st up purely to keep a long running record of the index journal. I have it so that there is no limit on the entries.

I only start up the instance about once a week. Up until now, the journal has kept all the details going back a month or more, but recently it's only keeping entries going back a day or so.

I'm not sure if it's to do with Everything or my system. Is it possible that the entries are lost when I put the computer to sleep, or restart explorer?

Sounds like Everything did an index rebuild.

Everything will clear your index journal when your index is rebuilt.

What is the last rebuild reason under Tools -> Debug -> Statistics -> Build -> Last rebuild reason?
What is the last rebuild date under Tools -> Debug -> Statistics -> Build -> Last rebuild date?

It appears the reason is 'remove fat volume'

Every so often I back up onto a thumb drive, presumably, removing it is causing this problem?
If I don't run Everything while the thumb drive is running, will that solve it? I usually ext Everything before ejecting the thumb drive as Everything causes issues on ejection.

if it is the case of it being the thumb drive, is their a way to run Everything and this not to happen, possibly uncheck the automatically include volumes?

Yes, please disable automatically index new volumes:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
    ---
  • Click the FAT tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new fixed volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new removable volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
    ---
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new fixed volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new removable volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
    ---
  • Click the ReFS tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new fixed volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically include new removable volumes.
  • Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
    ---
  • Click OK.

Thanks, I assume there's no other way round it as I do sometimes need to do a search on a removable drive or thumb drive?

There's no way to keep the index journal after a rebuild.

Consider firing up another instance for your removable drive or thumb drive.
