From the menu system I choose File, New and now have two separate maximized windows with Everything.
I think that two separate windows allows me to develop good search strings in that I can step from one Window to the next, increasing complexity at each step.
(1) Task Manager suggests that there really are two copies of Everything 1.5a loaded into memory. Yes?
(2) Both copies of Everything should be using the same, common databases as a source of data, Yes?
(3) In theory, assuming I am doing nothing else on my system, a File, Export, filelist from each Window should produce two identical CSV files, yes?
Thanks, Chris
Win11 Task Manager shows two processes named "Everything".File, New search window - why?
Re: File, New search window - why?
It would appear that Windows Task Manager treats every Everything window as a separate "Application" (at least that's what it is called in Win7).
That said, there is only one Everything process regardless of how many Everything windows are opened (for a particular Everything instance).
(There may also be a separate Everything service running, which WTM shows in its' Process tab.)
(Other programs, Process Hacker or Process Explorer, will show only one [& what they will call] Process, with the associated Everything Service, being shown as a Service.)

Task Manager lists one process with two windows.
Yes, as there's only one process.(2) Both copies of Everything should be using the same, common databases as a source of data, Yes?
The windows will share the same index.(3) In theory, assuming I am doing nothing else on my system, a File, Export, filelist from each Window should produce two identical CSV files, yes?
Multiple instances can be used to run multiple processes / different indexes.

Re: File, New search window - why?
Thank you Void.
I think I understand now:
If I had two separate projects (as mentioned in my recent reply) then a use for two windows might be that of consolidating files from each contributing project into a third window set up for an offshoot project.
Specifically, when a project such as a User Tutorial threatens to overwhelm me, I could split one project (folder) into three separate project folders (basic, search strings, all the rest) and use the three new windows to keep tabs on what has so far been distributed.
Hmmm. I met multiple instances when i was younger and was having trouble with installation. I will skip this - for now - and come back to it later!Multiple instances can be used to run multiple processes / different indexes.
Thanks again
Chris
