Everything doesn't search everything

Hi, I'm having a problem with Everything. It's not searching everything. I have an album on my computer called Spinefish, Fools Paradise. I type Spinefish, it finds nothing. I type fools, finds nothing. I type Paradise, finds nothing. You don't even have to tell me Everything doesn't search within files for tags, I was typing words in the filenames of files and it still didn't find jack.

I tried searching for random other things too, no luck. When it first runs, it says updating database and then shows that it has over 139,000 files. That's strange, I have a zillion files on my computer. ZILLIONS. I have nearly 2 terabytes and I find it hard to believe it collectively amounts to 139,000 files. I have zillions!

This Everything program isn't living up to its name, can someone tell me why it's not working?

I figured I might have a problem with permissions. I have my harddrives shared and I have it set so that it locks everyone out except for me and administrators on this PC. I even tried setting a permission so that Everyone has access and it didn't change anything. Everything still showed 139,000 files.

I'm on Windows XP Pro SP3.

I just discovered something. It is searching my C, G and K drive but it is not searching my D and E which have most of my files.

Can something be done about this?

Yeah, convert your D and E drives to NTFS, as they're most probably FAT32.

They are not FAT32, they are NTFS. Any ideas?

One thing did happen. I rebooted my computer the other day and CHKDSK performed a scan and fixed some corruptions on my D and E drive. Could this be related to why "Everything" isn't finding any files on them?

Anything reported in the Errorlog.txt file in your "Everything" installation folder?

If any errors occured while indexing a volume, the errors are reported in this file and the volume is automatically excluded.

Try re-including the volumes in "Everything".

To include a volume in "Everything":

• In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the Volumes tab.
• For each volume in the Local NTFS volumes list:
  • Check Check Media.
  • Check Enable USN Journal Logging.
  • Check Include in Database.
  • Check Monitor changes.
• Click OK.

There wasn't an error log.

Everything was already checked so I tried unchecking everything for my E drive except for the very top check mark. It started scanning my E and G drive and when it was over, it found 400,000 files. I checked all of the check boxes again and this time it found 514,000 files.

That's so weird! Any who, it seems to be working perfectly now.

I just discovered that it does not find a file that I know exists on my Vista 64bit laptop.
The file is "C:\Windows\System32\wuapp.exe"
The C: partition is formatted as NTFS.

The wuapp.exe file is Vista's "Windows Update" which is in the START > ALL PROGRAMS menu. I verified that the file exists in that path using Explorer. When I enter "wuapp.exe" in Everything's search text box, it is found in

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows..... (3 copies)
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows.... (3 copies)
but none in C:\Windows\System32.

If I use Vista's advanced search with "Include-non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow)" checked, it finds the "C:\Windows\System32\wuapp.exe" file.

I must be doing something wrong in Everything but what?

EVERYTHING SETUP:
In the TOOLS > OPTIONS > GENERAL menu, the following are checked:
- Run in background
- Start Everything on system startup
- Show shell context menus
- Start Menu shortcuts
- Confirm large sort
In the SEARCH menu, Match Case, Match Whole Word, Match Path, Enable Regex, are all unchecked.

MY SYSTEM:
Dell Studio 1537 laptop, 4GB ram, Vista 64bit.
Only one hard drive partitioned as:
V: 39MB Dell
D: 14.65GB NTFS Recovery
C: 53.70GB NTFS Operating System
E: 175.99GB NTFS Data
-- 53.71GB Unallocated

Any ideas?

While I wait for a reply to my post (copy above), could someone running Everything on a PC running Vista please do a search for wuapp.exe and see if it is found in the following path:

C:\Windows\System32\wuapp.exe

These missing files are Hardlinks and not physical files.

"Everything" will only include the original file.

You might be interested in Link Shell Extension to view Hardlink information.

First time I ever heard of a hardlink. Does seem weird that the file shows up in Explorer's display as a .exe file yet is not listed in Everything's search.
