Option to treat .nfo as text
Option to treat .nfo as text
Sorry ... in case I am overlooking an option that is already available.
If not, a suggestion: add an option to treat .nfo as text, so the it can be displayed in the preview.
(e.g. Options > Advanced ?)
Thanks!

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
Will depend on your windows version.
windows 11 shows previews for .nfo files out of the box. Windows 10 doesn't.
To have these previews on Win10 too:
- Start Registry Editor (regedit.exe) as administrator
- Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSInfoFile in the left pane
- Menu => Edit => New => String Value
- Name =
- Value =
- OK
Now .nfo files will be shown as plain text in the preview pane, in Everything as well as Explorer itself.

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
Not for me, and not in Explorer or ‘Everything’.

Hi,
it works as follows:
Perform the download (click...)
- Run PreviewConfig.exe (version 1.2.0.0) as administrator (right-click on file > Run as administrator)
- Confirm the UAC prompt (User Account Control)
- Type File types: .nfo and press ENTER
- Change the ‘Preview type’ from ‘None’ to ‘Plain text’
- Click on the ‘Apply’ button (information will appear below)
- Click on the ‘X’ to close
- Done!
- In ‘Everything’, e.g. version 1.5.0.1391a (x64), a preview for the .nfo file extension can be displayed immediately.

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
Thanks for all the feedbacks. Really appreciated.
Outside Everything, there is no problem to view the .nfo files.
In Opus I hit the preview and contents are displayed.
At times it is a bit inconvenient to switch back and forth between Everything and Opus.
The registry entry regretfully did not work. Not on my 'host' PC not in VM (after rebooting).
Neither the previewhandler thing.
Bad luck.
Anyway, I hope, one day there will be a 'native solution'.
Again thanks!

Hm, that's strange.
I have set up previews for several file extensions in various Windows and Everything versions
in both Everything and Windows Explorer at the same time.
Which version of Everything or Windows did you use?

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
For me, .nfo files were not previewed by default in Explorer or Everything.
Running actual Windows 11.
The following works now
I used the PreviewHandlerEditor.exe
and added MSInfoFile to the Windows TXT Previewer

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
The PreviewConfig is much limited compared to the PreviewHandlerEditor..therube wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 5:00 pm (Just to note, PreviewConfig is also available from:

Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
Is there difference between x86 & x64 version of PreviewHandlerEditor?
Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
No, you can also have the x86 version.therube wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 6:20 pm Is there difference between x86 & x64 version of PreviewHandlerEditor?
Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
Maybe in Windows 10 (am still running 10) things are is slightly different.NotNull wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:52 pm Will depend on your windows version.

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nfo
then create 2 value strings:
1. value string Content Type > text/plain
2. value string PerceivedType > text
Now Everything is showing the nfo preview as text.
-
Registry text
Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nfo]
@="MSInfoFile"
"Content Type"="text/plain"
"PerceivedType"="text"
Re: Option to treat .nfo as text
If this all fails, you can define a separate preview handler to be used in Everything exclusively:
BTW2: I successfully addded te registry keys to Window 10 and after tat .nfo could be previewed in Everything and Explorer.
- Go to Menu => Tools => Options => Advanced
- In the Show settings containing: field, type handlers
- Select preview_handlers
- Click the Edit button
- Add Item
- Filter =
*.nfo
- handler =
{1531d583-8375-4d3f-b5fb-d23bbd169f22}
- OK, OK, OK
- Done
