winrar drag-n-drop stopped working - but only with rar files!

Post by dwilbank »

First of all, Everything is definitely running as a service. Not as administrator.
Suddenly, I cannot drag found files into a found .rar archive.
But I can drag found files into a found .zip archive (which, judging by the purple icon, is also handled by winrar).
The files are compressed into the zip archive, then they are auto-deleted, just like they should be.
What could explain this madness?

So you have been able to do this in the past?

> I can drag found files into a found .zip archive

ZIP is (or at least can be) handled natively by Windows.

I don't have Winrar or Winzip (or any "Win" archiver).
Though I can drag a file from Everything into an existing ZIP archive, & it is added (in)to it.

Attempting the same with an existing RAR archive fails, simply drops a copy of my dragged file into the directory where the .rar is.

Now, if having Winrar installed would change that behavior, I don't know?

> The files are compressed into the zip archive, then they are auto-deleted

Now that part (the auto-delete), I would think is related to having Winrar installed.

Is it all (existing) RAR files that are now not reacting as expected or only a particular one?
If only the one, then maybe it is a permissions issue that that one file has?

From where to where are you dragging this file? (which applications?)
Do you select the file in Everything? Other application?
Do you drop the file on a .rar archive in Everything or a different applictaion?
Is the drag-source application 32-bit or 64-bit? Same for drop target.

What version of Everything are you running (current version = 1.4.1.1007) ? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Does it it work in File Explorer (I'm assuming you are running Windows 10)

First guess: You are running the 32-bit version of Everything. Install the 64-bit version instead.

yes, .rar drag-n-drop worked for years

and now when I try to drag any file onto any rar archive, I get a circle/slash forbidden icon.
Releasing the mouse button does not move the file, as it does in your case

all the dragging I mention occurs inside the Everything window (where the found files are displayed).
Outside of Everything, meaning in Explorer or DOpus, the drag-drop works just fine.
And I'm running 1.4.1.988 x64.
Upgrading to 1005 for fun right now though!

Just installed WinRAR to test this: just like you before: no single issue.

Some guesses that all turned out to be wrong:
- You can disable drag-drop in Everything, but then you would not see the Stop sign (that mean that you are already dragging)
- Another application might have locked the file you are dragging. When you have the file opened in the Preview Pane, this should not lock the file (and it didn't)

Can you drag the file outside of Everything to -for example - a File Explorer window?
Or from the file in Everything to the rar-file in a File Explorer window?
And the other way around: Can you drag the file from File Explorer to the rar-file in Everything?

(So basically I have no clue ATM ... )
