Apparent Aberration shown up by EFU FileLists

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I do not think that this is a bug in Everything, in particular in EFU lists. I suspect it is something I have done without thinking.
Nonetheless, it makes a great example of Everything making me aware of apparent discrepancies in my operating procedures.

Sunday nights I backup my data T: to a USB drive Y:, then backup the Y: drive to a cumulative Z: drive, and finally make a mirror image of my T: data drive to the nightly backup Y:.
At the end of this run, my drives T: and Y: should be perfect copies of each other.

Monday morning I made an EFU list of my backup drive Y:, dismounted the backup drive, and then added the EFU list to Tools, Options, Indexes.

I tested by looking for files "WhatFAQ/DOC" of which I have hundreds - one for each project of any kind.

Here the Result List is sorted by Size, and we can see my WhatFAQs apparently grouped in pairs. So far so good.

Note: The Result List displays an odd number (493) of items; I expected an even number. I do not recall deleting (or creating) a new WhatFAQ.DOC between Sunday night at 1800 hours and Monday morning at 1000 hours. Although at the bottom of this screenshot it seems that I might have re-arranged some folders (in \Greaves\Products\User\Spell) that is a result of the screenshot being truncated.

With any file other than WhatFAQ.DOC I would think "Oh well, maybe a created or deleted a copy between last night and this morning", but my WhatFAQ docs are special document. They contain uniquely numbered lists of any problem, suggestion, enhancement etc in a project, and these files are not lightly created or deleted.

I post this here for a heads-up, and will mull over it

I truly expect to have matching pairs of files after a mirror-image is made.

Cheers, Chris

Please try to find the missing filename from your list.

That might give a clue to what is going on.

The following search might help:
whatFAQ.doc unique:size
