.7z files take long time to index

Post by anmac1789 »

Hello, I thought that everything 1.5 version 1354a indexes .7z files as well but no .7z files were showing. I had to manually enable indexing properties -- container file names and then add .7z into the list together with .rar and .zip. Am I making a mistake or is 7z not being indexed by default ? Because when I add .7z format to index properties, it takes a long time for everything to index it and I don't even have that many .7z files on my C:\ drive. What is going on ?

Yeah, that part seemed a bit odd.
is 7z not being indexed by default ?
I added "7z" as an indexed Property, then went back & added "7z" as (Container Filenames) as a New Column.
(I don't see the column being particularly useful.)
I don't even have that many .7z files
How many is "that many"?

Remember, "add .7z into the list together with .rar and .zip".
So when you indexed, you are indexing .7z & .rar & .zip.
So if you don't "that many" .7z, but you do have a lot of .zip...

Anyhow, some 10K .7z, .rar, .zip here & they were indexed in seconds (less then 1 minute).

Around 10-12 .7z files each size varies from around 5 MB to about 4-6 GB
Somehow, for me indexing together with 7z takes a very long time. I'm talking about like 2 and a half hours

And how many .zip files?
Again, if you did nothing more then you said, you are indexing .zip (& .rar, also).

Who knows, maybe antivirus is also playing in?
As in "zip" is being open to be read, A/V says "hey, ZIP, bad news", so scans all the files within...

(When was the last time your A/V found anything in your ZIP, or anywhere for that matter.
[But that's a different discussion.])

Quite alot of zip files actually, some are even more than 50 GB in size...

The only anti-virus I have installed on my PC is malwarebytes anti-malware. I don't install more than 1 anti-virus because I don't want it to interfere with normal windows system files or registry data.

(Heh.
Much like "FULLY" there is no such thing as "those types of websites".
Every been to youtube.com, or google.com, or voidtools.com, or... you never know.)

Somethings wrong, I'm thinking, on your end.
Time is simply too long.
On a non-indexed instance of Everything,
zip: zip-file-name:"id.pdf"
took seconds to complete, 12000 [zip:] files, 58 GB (largest single file is 600 MB).

The only anti-virus I have installed on my PC is malwarebytes anti-malware.
And Windows Defender (or whatever it is called) is disabled?
(Last I knew, from ages ago, Defender & MBAM did not conflict & MBAM was not "treated" as an A/V, so did not disable Defender?)

Thank you for your post anmac1789,

The next Everything alpha update will include .7z files by default when indexing container filenames and container filename count.

Everything will likely reindex all your zip and rar files when changing which files are included.
This can take a long time.
Progress is shown in the status bar.
