Everything Service
The Everything service allows Everything to quickly index NTFS volumes and monitor NTFS volumes for changes without running Everything as administrator.

Installing
The Everything service is installed by default.
To install the Everything service:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Check Everything Service. Make sure it shows a tick (✓), not a dash (-).
- Uncheck Run as administrator. The Everything service allows Everything to run as a standard user.
- Click OK.
If
Run as administrator was enabled, restart Everything:
- In Everything, from the File menu, click Exit.
- Restart Everything.
The Everything service starts automatically after installation and when Windows starts.
Start and stop the service
The Everything service starts automatically after installation and when Windows starts.
To stop the Everything service to update the portable version, see
Update portable version.
To stop the Everything service:
- Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Click the Services tab.
- Right-click Everything and click Stop.
To start the Everything service:
- Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Click the Services tab.
- Right-click Everything and click Start.
Everything automatically starts the Everything service when needed.
Update portable version
The portable
Everything.exe cannot be replaced while the Everything service is running.
To update the portable version:
- In Everything, from the File menu, click Exit.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
- Click the Services tab.
- Right-click Everything and click Stop.
- Replace the existing
Everything.exe with the new version.
- Start
Everything.exe.
The Everything service starts automatically when Everything starts.
Uninstall the service
The Everything service is removed when Everything is uninstalled.
To remove the portable version, see
Uninstall portable version.
To manually uninstall the Everything service:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Uncheck Everything Service.
- Click OK.

- Uncheck Everything Service.
- Click OK.

Run indexing process as administrator
As an alternative to the Everything service, run the Everything indexing process as an administrator.
Everything runs a separate indexing process with administrative privileges while the main Everything process continues to run as a standard user.
No changes are made to the system when enabling
Run indexing process as administrator.
To enable
Run indexing process as administrator:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Uncheck Everything Service.
- Check Run indexing process as administrator.
- Click OK.
The Everything indexing process is the same as the Everything service.
The indexing process runs in your user session and requires a UAC prompt when Everything starts.
The Everything service runs in the background as a Windows service and does not require a UAC prompt when Everything starts.
Index NTFS volumes without the Everything service
NTFS volumes can be indexed without the Everything service, but indexing is much slower.
To index an NTFS volume or folder without the Everything service:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Folders tab on the left.
- Click Add....
- Select the NTFS volume or folder to index.
- Click OK.
Folder indexes do not use the Everything service.
Resource usage
The Everything service uses about 1 MB of RAM and has no noticeable CPU usage.
Security
Any local user can use the Everything service to obtain a list of all NTFS filenames.
Only the Everything process code-signed by voidtools PTY LTD can access the Everything service.
The Everything service can only provide filename information.
It cannot be used to access the files themselves.
